Ghana: John Mahama Elected President with 56% of the Votes

John Mahama, the candidate from the opposition party in Ghana, has won the presidential election with 56% of the vote. He defeated the ruling party’s candidate, current Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, who garnered 41%, as announced by the Electoral Commission on Monday.
Mahamudu Bawumia has accepted his defeat in the election held the previous day.
The victory for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) signifies its return to power after eight years under the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Additionally, the NDC achieved success in the legislative elections conducted on the same day. Mahama, 66, who previously served as Ghana’s president from 2012 to 2017, has pledged to revitalize the economy and implement anti-corruption reforms.
“I have the distinct honor… to declare His Excellency John Dramani Mahama the winner,” announced Jean Mensa, chairperson of the Electoral Commission.
Since the restoration of multi-party politics in 1992, Ghana’s two primary political parties have alternated power fairly evenly.
