Eruption on Reykjanes Peninsula : Authorities Monitor Lava Flow and Evacuate Grindavík

Peninsula on Wednesday, November 20, at 11:14 PM, following a swarm of small earthquakes between 10:00 and 11:00 PM. The eruption is significantly smaller than the previous one in the area. Authorities have activated a coordination centre to monitor the eruption’s location and lava flow, while a Coast Guard helicopter is surveying the site.
Flights to and from Keflavík Airport are operating as usual, and no immediate threat to infrastructure has been reported. Grindavík, the Svartsengi Power Station, and the Blue Lagoon have all been successfully evacuated as a precaution. The lava is flowing west towards Grindavíkurvegur, but is not expected to reach Grindavík. Police have set up roadblocks near Reykjanesbraut, restricting access to Grindavík.
Despite the eruption’s intensity being smaller than previous events, authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, with lava flow still progressing. The eruption site is approximately two kilometers long, extending northeast, and has not posed a significant threat to the surrounding infrastructure so far.
