The African Union Calls for a Comprehensive, Libyan-Led Reconciliation

The African Union on Saturday called for a permanent ceasefire in Libya, following deadly clashes in the capital earlier this month and widespread protests demanding the prime minister’s resignation.

In a statement on platform X, the Council called for a “comprehensive, Libyan-led reconciliation” and urged an end to all foreign interference.

Between May 12 and 15, Tripoli saw intense clashes between armed groups and forces loyal to the government, after the Government of National Unity announced plans to dismantle all militias controlling the city.

Heavy clashes left at least eight people dead, according to the United Nations, before a truce was reached last Thursday. While relative calm has since returned to the city, the situation remains highly unstable amid mounting calls for Prime Minister Abdelhamid Dbeibah to step down.
