Poland Blames Russia Despite Reports of Stray Polish Missile Hitting Home

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said Wednesday that Russia bears full responsibility for damage to a house in the eastern village of Wyryki, after reports suggested the incident may have been caused by a malfunctioning Polish missile rather than a Russian drone. The clarification came after the daily Rzeczpospolita, citing security sources, claimed that a Polish F-16 missile misfired during efforts to intercept Russian drones between September 9 and 10, striking the home but failing to detonate due to built-in safety systems.

Initially, authorities said the house had been hit by a Russian drone. In a post on social platform X, Tusk insisted: “All responsibility for the damage to the house in Wyryki falls on those responsible for provocation, the Russians.” He said the public and the president would be fully informed once investigations concluded. However, Poland’s National Security Bureau (BBN), which reports to President Karol Nawrocki, noted that the president had not received a government report on the matter before the article appeared, stressing that “society rightly demands the truth and reliable information.”

The Defense Ministry countered that it had kept the BBN updated throughout the probe. Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz rejected claims of a cover-up, describing them as false, and stressed that “the military and services are carrying out their work exemplarily, and the aggressor bears full responsibility for the losses resulting from this unprecedented Russian provocation.”
