Moldova: “No” vote leads in EU membership referendum

CHISINAU – In a referendum held on Sunday, Moldovans were asked whether EU membership should be enshrined as a constitutional goal, and according to partial results from the Electoral Commission, the “no” vote is currently in the lead.

After counting more than 40% of the ballots, the “no” vote had received 56%, compared to 44% for the “yes” vote—a result that would be surprising if confirmed. However, the trend could still change, as many votes remain to be counted in the capital, Chisinau, which is more supportive of EU membership.
