Fire Aboard USS Zumwalt Raises Fresh Safety Concerns for US Navy Fleet

A fire broke out aboard the USS Zumwalt in Pascagoula, leaving one sailor hospitalized in stable condition while two others were treated on-site, according to USNI News. The crew managed to quickly contain and extinguish the blaze, preventing further escalation aboard the advanced stealth destroyer.

The United States Navy has launched an investigation to determine the cause of the incident and assess the extent of the damage. The vessel, commissioned in 2016 as the lead ship of a next-generation class of multi-mission guided-missile destroyers, has been undergoing significant modernization since August 2023. Upgrades include the replacement of its long-range gun system with missile tubes designed to deploy hypersonic weapons, marking a major shift in its combat capabilities.

This latest incident adds to a series of mishaps involving high-value US naval assets. Notably, the USS Gerald R. Ford—the world’s largest aircraft carrier—previously suffered a fire while deployed in the Red Sea, resulting in several sailors being treated for smoke inhalation. The recurrence of such incidents is likely to intensify scrutiny over operational safety and maintenance standards within the US Navy’s most advanced fleet units.
