Erdogan Praises Algeria’s Support for the Palestinian Cause

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Thursday evening in Ankara praised Algeria’s support for the Palestinian cause, particularly during its tenure as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council over the past two years.

In a joint press statement alongside President Abdelmadjid Tebboune on the occasion of the first session of the Algerian-Turkish High-Level Strategic Cooperation Council, President Erdogan said he was pleased to see a convergence of views between Turkey and Algeria on key issues concerning the African continent and the region.

“We are among the strongest advocates of the two-state solution in Palestine,” he said, recalling that the proclamation of the State of Palestine took place in Algiers in 1988.

He added that “we highly value the support provided by Algeria to the Palestinian cause during its membership in the United Nations Security Council over the past two years,” noting that the Israeli aggression in Gaza, the West Bank and Lebanon “has once again proven that the real security problem in our region lies in Israel’s expansionist policies that do not recognize any laws or rules.”

The Turkish president also stated that Algeria and Turkey share “a common position on the need to end the cycle of violence that seriously threatens the peace and security of our region.”

He concluded by stressing that “mutual respect and affection rooted in our shared history constitute the driving force of Turkish-Algerian relations,” adding that this spirit of solidarity is reflected not only in bilateral ties but also in shared positions on many international issues.
