Western Sahara: Broad Sahrawi Participation in 87th ACHPR Session

A Sahrawi civil society delegation participated Monday in the 87th Ordinary Session of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR), held in the Gambian capital, Banjul.
The delegation comprised prominent figures from Sahrawi civil society, alongside international activists and supporters of the Sahrawi cause, all of whom reaffirmed their unwavering commitment to the Sahrawi people’s right to freedom and self-determination.
The session provided a strategic opportunity for high-level exchanges with human rights advocates and diplomats attending the proceedings.
Discussions focused on strengthening coordination and cooperation with African organizations dedicated to human rights and decolonization across the continent, with participants emphasizing the critical importance of sustained joint action within African and international frameworks to safeguard the fundamental rights of the Sahrawi people.
The works featured interventions from a number of Sahrawi and international NGOs, whose testimonies exposed the reality of repression and systematic restrictions imposed on Sahrawis living under Moroccan occupation, while asserting the Sahrawi people’s inalienable right to freedom and independence.
This participation forms part of the sustained advocacy efforts of Sahrawi human rights organizations, committed to bringing the voices of victims and rights defenders to the forefront of the African Union’s principal mechanisms for the protection of human and peoples’ rights.
