Algeria, Somalia Discuss Expanding Cooperation in Hydrocarbons Sector

The Algerian Minister of State, Minister of Hydrocarbons, Mohamed Arkab, received on Tuesday, at the ministry’s headquarters, the Minister of Interior, Federal Affairs, and Reconciliation of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Ali Yusuf Ali Hosh, who is on an official visit to Algeria, according to a statement issued by the ministry.

The meeting took place in the presence of the Ambassador of Somalia to Algeria and senior officials from the Ministry of Hydrocarbons, and focused on ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation between the two countries, particularly in the hydrocarbons sector, in light of the growing momentum in the Algerian-Somali relations following the visit of the President of the Federal Republic of Somalia to Algeria in November 2025, which resulted in the signing of several cooperation agreements.

The discussions centered on prospects for cooperation in the fields of exploration, production, refining and training, as Somalia prepares to launch oil and gas exploration operations in 2026 and seeks to benefit from Algeria’s experience, particularly the expertise of “Sonatrach” Group, as well as the legal and regulatory frameworks governing the sector.

Both sides also agreed on the importance of strengthening partnerships between specialized institutions in the two countries and expanding training and expertise transfer programs, notably through the Algerian Institute of Petroleum, in order to support Somalia’s efforts to develop its energy sector.

In this regard, Arkab reaffirmed Algeria’s readiness, in line with the directives of the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, to accompany the Federal Republic of Somalia and support it with its expertise in the hydrocarbons field, within the framework of strengthening African cooperation and South-South cooperation.

Yusuf Ali is on an official visit to Algeria at the invitation of the Minister of Interior, Local Authorities and Transport, Saïd Sayoud.
