US Court Issues Arrest Warrant for one of India’s Richest Men Over ‘$250m Bribes’

Gautam Adani, the 62-year-old billionaire head of the Adani Group, has been implicated in a high-stakes bribery scandal related to one of the world’s largest solar projects. The allegations, which also involve his nephew Sagar Adani and six other individuals, stem from an FBI investigation claiming they arranged bribes for Indian government officials to secure lucrative solar energy contracts.
The indictment alleges that the group coordinated to pay over $250 million in bribes to officials, misled investors and banks to raise billions, and obstructed justice. According to Deputy Assistant Attorney General Lisa Miller, the indictment details how the defendants sought to generate over $2 billion in profits by engaging in fraudulent schemes.
The FBI also stated that Adani himself personally met with Indian government officials to advance the bribery plan. The indictment includes claims that conspirators used code names like “numero uno” and “the big man” to reference Mr. Adani and detailed notes from Sagar Adani that tracked bribe payments. Text messages allegedly show attempts to destroy evidence and deceive investigators.
