Twenty Dead in Clashes in Pakistan (Updated Toll)

The death toll from five days of tribal clashes in northwestern Pakistan has risen to 20, according to a local official on Wednesday. Previously, the toll stood at 15.

The conflict has also left 75 individuals injured in the Kurram district, which is located near the border with Afghanistan and has a history of violent confrontations.

In July, land disputes resulted in the deaths of 35 people, a conflict that only ceased after a jirga, or tribal council, called for a ceasefire. Authorities are currently working to establish a new truce.

“Dozens of homes have been damaged… All efforts by the government and other tribes to stop the fighting have failed,” a senior administrative official in Kurram told the media. Heavy weaponry, including mortar shells, continues to be employed in the ongoing confrontations.
