Sudan’s Al Jazirah Faces Looming Famine Amid Humanitarian Crisis

The United Nations has warned of a worsening humanitarian situation in Sudan’s Al Jazirah state, threatened by famine due to the ongoing conflict since April 2023.

UN Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq announced that the World Food Programme (WFP) delivered 260 tons of emergency food supplies to Wad Madani, the state capital, sufficient for over 20,000 people. This marks the first delivery of aid in more than a year.

OCHA highlighted severe shortages of food, water, and healthcare in the region, with alarming levels of malnutrition. Al Jazirah is one of 17 regions at risk of famine, urging urgent action to protect civilians and provide critical aid.
