Putin at SCO Summit: Ukraine Crisis Rooted in NATO Expansion and 2014 Coup

At the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit, Russian President Vladimir Putin stressed that no country can ensure its security at the expense of another, a principle he said is central to Russia’s position on the Ukrainian crisis. He pointed to Western attempts to pull Ukraine into NATO as a key factor fueling tensions, arguing that such actions undermine stability in the region.

Putin emphasized that the crisis did not stem from an “attack” but from a “coup d’état”. He underlined that Moscow views these developments as the true origin of the ongoing conflict. In this context, the Russian president reaffirmed his country’s readiness to share its perspective with international partners.

The Russian leader announced that he would brief his SCO counterparts on the results of the recent Alaska summit during bilateral meetings. He also highlighted Russia’s appreciation for the efforts of China, India, and other SCO partners in seeking ways to resolve the situation in Ukraine through dialogue and cooperation.
