Harris and Trump make final push in Sun Belt, polls show tight race ahead of Election Day

Democrat Kamala Harris and Republican Donald Trump focused on the Sun Belt on Saturday, launching a final weekend effort to sway undecided voters in key battleground states. They presented competing agendas on the economy and other issues, each asserting that their proposals reflect the desires of the American people.

At a rally in Gastonia, North Carolina, Trump claimed that he had overcome numerous challenges, including two assassination attempts, and emphasised the significance of the upcoming election.

Speaking in Virginia afterward, he insisted on being close to a historic victory. Trump expressed confidence that he would win both the Electoral College and the popular vote, a goal he had not achieved in previous elections.

On the other hand, Kamala Harris has been encouraging her supporters to vote early, positioning herself as a candidate for a “new generation of leadership.”

During a rally in Atlanta, Harris engaged the crowd by asking if anyone had already voted, receiving enthusiastic cheers. This rally was part of a final effort to boost early and in-person voting ahead of Election Day.

In another context, a new poll in Iowa shows Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris leading Republican Donald Trump 47% to 44%, a notable shift attributed mainly to support from women voters, particularly older and politically independent women. This represents a turnaround from a September poll where Trump had a 4-point lead.

Despite this positive news for Harris, the Trump campaign dismissed the Des Moines Register poll as an outlier, citing an Emerson College poll released the same day that had Trump ahead by 10 points. This Emerson poll indicated Trump’s strong support among men and independents, while Harris performed well with voters under 30.

Both candidates are viewed as being in a close race nationally as early voting continues ahead of Election Day on Tuesday.
