Greek Parliament Fails to Elect President in Third Round, Final Vote Looms

Greece’s parliament failed to elect a new president on Thursday in the third round of voting, with Konstantinos Tasoulas, the candidate of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis’ New Democracy party, falling short of the required 180 votes. Tasoulas, a former parliament speaker, secured 160 votes, the same as in the previous two rounds, leaving the election unresolved.

With the threshold dropping to 151 votes in the fourth and final round scheduled for next week, Tasoulas is now in a stronger position to secure victory. Meanwhile, Louka Katseli, backed by the leftist SYRIZA and New Left Party, received 40 votes, while PASOK-supported candidate Tasos Giannitsis garnered 34. Far-right Niki party nominee Kostas Kyriakou secured 14 votes.

Despite the ongoing political maneuvering, Greece’s presidency remains a largely ceremonial role. The upcoming vote will determine whether Tasoulas can secure the required majority or if further political negotiations will reshape the race.
