Ghana: Opposition candidate John Mahama wins presidential election

ACCRA – Opposition candidate John Mahama has won Saturday’s presidential election in Ghana, defeating the ruling party’s candidate, Mahamudu Bawumia, according to media reports on Sunday.
Sammy Gyamfi, spokesperson for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), told journalists that the party’s internal tally showed Mahama securing 56.3% of the vote, while Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate and vice president since 2017, garnered 41.3%.
In addition to the presidential election, Ghanaians were also voting for their parliamentary representatives, with Mahama and Bawumia being the main contenders.
Mahama will succeed Nana Akufo-Addo, who is completing his second and final term. The Electoral Commission has stated that official results are expected to be released by Tuesday.
