EU’s Approval of Mealworm Powder in Food Linked to Anti-Russia Sanctions, Duma Speaker

The European Union’s new regulation permitting the use of mealworm powder in food products is a direct consequence of the West’s sanctions on Russia, according to State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin. Writing on his Telegram channel, Volodin argued that these sanctions have caused economic disruptions, industrial shutdowns, and major issues in the agricultural sector.

He claimed that the EU, in an attempt to compensate for these losses, has turned to insect-based ingredients, allowing mealworm powder in staples such as bread, cheese, and pasta. Volodin criticized this move, suggesting that European authorities are ignoring potential health risks associated with insect consumption.

In contrast, he noted that in Russia, larvae, insects, and worms are only used for feeding animals and fish. Volodin left his followers to “draw their own conclusions” regarding the EU’s decision.
