China Fast-Tracks C929 Jet to Challenge Boeing–Airbus Dominance

China is accelerating efforts to bring its homegrown long-haul passenger aircraft, the C929, to market, aiming to challenge the long-standing dominance of Boeing and Airbus in global aviation.

The country’s aviation regulator has finalized new cooperation agreements with counterparts in Hong Kong and Macau to accelerate certification processes for the widebody jet. The framework also extends to international cooperation in maintenance, pilot training, and environmental standards, including aviation fuel practices.

The initiative builds on the model used for the C919 narrowbody program, which helped streamline regulatory pathways and operational readiness. With the C929, China is seeking to scale that approach to the long-haul segment, signaling a broader strategic push to reshape the global aviation market and reduce reliance on Western manufacturers.
