Algeria’s candidate and member of the Council of the Nation (Parliament’s Upper House), Senator Fateh Boutbig, was elected President of the Pan-African Parliament (PAP) on Thursday.
Boutbig was elected for the 2026-2029 legislative term during an extraordinary session held in Midrand, South Africa, securing a majority of 119 votes out of 152.
The election marked the culmination of a process that began within the North African Group. Boutbig had previously won the group’s primary elections on Wednesday evening, receiving 19 votes to 4.
His election by a significant majority followed a broad consensus within the Parliament. As the unified candidate for the North African Group, his victory reflects the diplomatic standing of the Algerian Parliament at both regional and continental levels.
