The United Nations reported on Wednesday that 9.8 million children in Yemen require humanitarian assistance as the country endures a bloody conflict that has lasted for nearly a decade.
In a statement published on its official website to mark World Children’s Day, observed annually on November 20, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Yemen highlighted that the country continues to face severe protection and humanitarian crises as it enters its tenth year of conflict.
The statement emphasized that 9.8 million Yemeni children are in need of one or more forms of humanitarian aid. It noted that children bear the brunt of the conflict, being more vulnerable to poverty, disease, malnutrition, violence, and lack of access to primary education. The ongoing war has devastated all aspects of life, with UN estimates declaring Yemen the site of the “world’s worst humanitarian crisis.”
