Trump nominates Elise Stefanik as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations

WASHINGTON – Donald Trump has chosen Republican Representative Elise Stefanik to serve as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, the president-elect said in a statement shared with Reuters on Monday.

“I am honored to nominate Chairwoman Elise Stefanik to serve in my Cabinet as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations. Elise is an incredibly strong, tough, and smart America First fighter,” Trump said.

Elise Stefanik rose to Republican leadership in the House of Representatives in 2021, replacing Liz Cheney, who was ousted for criticising Trump’s continued false claims of election fraud.

In 2019, Stefanik gained national attention for her passionate defence of Trump during his first impeachment trial.

Additionally, she was considered a potential vice-presidential pick for Trump before he chose J.D. Vance.

In another context, the United Nations has been preparing for Trump’s return and the cuts to U.S. funding and engagement with the world body that are likely to come with his second term as president.

Among the top concerns at the U.N. is whether the United States will reduce its financial contributions to the 193-member organization and withdraw from key multinational institutions and agreements, including the World Health Organization and the Paris Climate Agreement.
