ITU Regional Workshop Kicks Off in Algiers

ALGIERS- The proceedings of a regional workshop of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), organized under the aegis of the Algerian Ministry of Post and Telecommunications themed “Towards Inclusive and Targeted Connectivity in the Arab Region,” began Monday in Algiers.

The Minister of Post and Telecommunications, Karim Bibi Triki, the High Commissioner for Digitization, Meriem Benmouloud, the Minister of Knowledge Economy, Start-ups and Micro-enterprises, Yacine El-Mahdi Oualid, the Director of the ITU Regional Office for Arab States, Adel Darwish, as well as representatives from several Arab countries, attended the opening ceremony of this workshop.

In his opening address, the CEO of Algérie Télécom, Adel Bentoumi, affirmed that holding of this event in Algeria vouch for “the trust” that the ITU places in Algeria’s efforts, as well as its “fruitful” cooperation with the Union.

For his part, Darwish praised the “remarkable achievements” accomplished by Algeria in the field of telecommunications infrastructure, stressing that this workshop was part of the realization of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

This workshop aims to establish “targeted and inclusive communication in the Arab region,” to “exchange expertise and knowledge so as to ensure sustainable and affordable connectivity,” but also to define “investment priorities” in this field by proposing appropriate solutions, he said.

The opening session was marked by the projection of a video highlighting the major achievements in telecommunications infrastructure in Algeria, as well as the progress made in information and communication technologies (ICT), in compliance with the instructions of the Algerian President, Abdelmadjid Tebboune.

This two-day workshop brings together decision-makers, experts in the field of telecommunications and representatives from several Arab countries, who will explore innovative strategies and solutions aimed at strengthening connectivity and ensuring targeted access to ICT in the region.
