Sudan: Cholera Epidemic Death Toll Reaches 506

The Sudanese Ministry of Health announced on Thursday that the cholera outbreak in the country has exceeded 15,500 infections, resulting in 506 deaths since last August.

In a statement, the ministry reported 268 new cholera cases across six states, including four fatalities, from Wednesday to Thursday. Consequently, the total number of cholera infections now stands at 15,577, with 506 deaths recorded across 10 out of 18 states.

On August 12, Sudanese authorities declared a cholera epidemic in the country. Cholera is a bacterial disease typically transmitted through contaminated water, leading to severe diarrhea and dehydration. If not treated promptly, it can be fatal within hours.

This year’s natural disasters and epidemics in Sudan coincide with the ongoing suffering caused by the conflict between the army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). This conflict, which erupted on April 15, 2023, has resulted in thousands of deaths and displaced over 10 million people.
