Spain: Western Sahara Between Escalating Moroccan Occupation Violations and Absence of Implementation of International Resolutions

The Spanish capital is set to host a seminar on May 22 addressing international legitimacy in Western Sahara and the need to uphold human rights in the occupied territory, bringing together prominent Spanish judges, lawyers, academics and members of parliament.
The seminar, titled “International Legitimacy, Western Sahara and the Commitment to Human Rights,” is being organized by prominent legal and human rights bodies.
The event’s organizers said that the event aims to examine the legal status of Western Sahara and assert that the Sahrawi issue is fundamentally a matter of decolonization, while emphasizing the need to protect the basic rights of the Sahrawi people, notably the right to self-determination and independence.
The seminar will feature a high-level roundtable on “International Legitimacy in Western Sahara,” bringing together prominent legal experts and international law professors from Spanish universities, alongside the Polisario Front’s representative in Spain.
The event will also include contributions from judges, lawyers and academics specializing in international law who closely follow the human rights situation in occupied Western Sahara.
