Boris Spassky, the Soviet chess world champion best known for his iconic match against American Bobby Fischer in 1972 during the height of the Cold War, has passed away at the age of 88, according to the Russian Chess Federation.
“A great personality has left us; generations of chess players have studied and continue to study his games and contributions. This is a significant loss for the country,” remarked Andrei Filatov, president of the Russian Chess Federation, as reported by TASS.
