Somalia stresses Western Sahara stance communicated solely through official channels

Somalia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Saturday that Mogadishu’s official position regarding the issue of Western Sahara is conveyed solely through its formal statements and official communications.

In response to recent media reports that attributed certain statements on the issue of Western Sahara to the Federal Republic of Somalia, the Foreign Ministry said, “Somalia’s official position is conveyed exclusively through its formal statements and official communications.”

“Somalia takes note of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797 and the important role it plays in supporting the peaceful settlement process under the auspices of the United Nations,” the ministry said in a statement, calling on the two parties to engage in serious and direct negotiations with a view to reaching a peaceful and final solution in accordance with the relevant United Nations resolutions.

In this regard, Somalia expressed its “full support” for the efforts of the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy to relaunch the political process.
