President Ramaphosa’s Visit to Algeria : A Reaffirmation of Shared Struggles for Justice and Sovereignty

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa begins today a state visit to Algeria at the invitation of Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. This visit marks a pivotal moment in the longstanding relationship between the two nations, founded on mutual struggles for liberation, justice, and independence.

A Legacy of Liberation and Solidarity
Algeria’s historic role in supporting South Africa’s battle against apartheid has fostered a deep bond between the two nations. From the days of Algeria’s support for the South African liberation struggle, both countries have continued to advocate for the rights of oppressed peoples worldwide, including their strong, united stance on the Palestinian and Sahrawi causes. Their joint actions at international forums, including the United Nations and the International Criminal Court, reflect their shared commitment to global justice.

Defending Global Justice and Palestinian Rights
A cornerstone of this enduring partnership is the defense of Palestinian rights. Both Algeria and South Africa have consistently called for accountability for Israeli leaders and have worked tirelessly to push for international recognition of Palestinian self-determination. Their efforts recently culminated in the ICC’s historic decision to issue arrest warrants for Israeli leaders involved in war crimes in Gaza, a victory driven by the persistence of both nations’ diplomacy.

Solidarity for Sahrawi Self-Determination
In addition to their advocacy for Palestine, Algeria and South Africa stand united in their support for the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination. Both countries have consistently opposed Morocco’s occupation of Western Sahara and have called for a referendum on the region’s independence. South Africa’s unwavering support for the Sahrawi cause was reaffirmed by President Ramaphosa in 2022, signaling his country’s continued commitment to African sovereignty.

A Shared Vision for Africa’s Future
Beyond these specific issues, Algeria and South Africa also share a vision for the future of Africa. They are committed to peace, security, and economic cooperation across the continent, working to address the root causes of conflict and instability. Their partnership extends beyond political solidarity to tangible cooperation in peacekeeping and regional economic integration, with both nations striving for a more prosperous and sovereign Africa.

The State Visit: Strengthening Bilateral Ties
President Ramaphosa’s visit serves as a celebration of the deep friendship between Algeria and South Africa. The visit will reaffirm their mutual commitment to advancing justice, peace, and the rights of oppressed peoples globally. Ramaphosa will address the Algerian Parliament, reinforcing the strength of this enduring partnership and underscoring their shared values and goals.

As the two countries continue to stand together in their commitment to justice, equality, and African sovereignty, their relationship remains a beacon of hope for oppressed peoples worldwide, driving positive change on the continent and beyond.
