Poll: Over 60% of French people support Macron’s resignation, calling him “authoritarian”

PARIS – A recent survey by sociological service Odoxa-Backbone, commissioned by Le Figaro, indicated that over 60% of the French people support the resignation of President Emmanuel Macron.
The poll, conducted on January 2-3 with over 1,000 participants, found that 61% of respondents favoured Emmanuel Macron’s resignation, while 28% opposed it, and 1% were undecided.
Furthermore, 62% of those surveyed described Macron’s presidency as authoritarian, highlighting growing public dissatisfaction with his leadership.
The majority of respondents (86%) believed that Macron would need to appoint a new French prime minister to replace François Bayrou, leader of the centrist Democratic Movement party.
In retrospect, 2024 was a year of an unprecedented political crisis in France, sparked by the dissolution of the National Assembly. Accordingly, it was characterised by national paralysis, a fragmented political landscape, and extreme polarisation of opinions.
According to the Financial Times, this political turmoil has weighed heavily on the French market, analysts said, with François Bayrou becoming the country’s fourth prime minister this year.
Earlier this month, Moody’s downgraded France’s credit rating following outgoing premier Michel Barnier’s government’s vote of no confidence, citing a “materially weaker” economic outlook, the source added.
