ALGIERS – The Algerian President, Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces and Minister of Defense, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, chaired a Cabinet meeting on Sunday that discussed a draft law on the prevention of drugs and psychoactive substances, presentations on the integration of contracted teachers, the results of the international consultation regarding the importation of livestock for the upcoming Eid al-Adha, as well as air travel fare reductions for the national community abroad in celebration of the holiday.
After the Prime Minister’s presentation on the government’s activities over the past two weeks, as well as the interventions from ministers regarding the draft laws and reports, the Algerian President issued the following orders, instructions, and directives:
Regarding the integration of contracted teachers:
The Algerian President approved the integration of 82,410 contracted teachers across various educational levels, further fulfilling his commitments to the education sector and recognizing the importance of educators and their role in shaping and strengthening the youth.
This decision follows a previous integration process that included 62,000 contracted teachers, bringing the total number of integrated teachers to 144,410 across all educational stages.
Regarding the results of the international consultation on importing livestock for Eid al-Adha:
The Algerian President approved the import of one million head of livestock in preparation for Eid al-Adha. These imports will be exempt from all duties and taxes, making the prices more accessible to citizens.
Offers from three countries were accepted, as they met Algeria’s requirements, particularly regarding the safety standards for livestock intended for sacrifice.
Regarding the reductions in air travel fares for Algerians abroad:
The Cabinet approved a 40% discount on all flights to Algeria with Air Algerie, allowing the Algerian community abroad to spend Eid al-Adha with their families.
Regarding the preventive plan for the potential threat of locust swarms at the southern borders:
President Abdelmadjid Tebboune affirmed that Algeria is a leader in the fight against locusts, with the necessary expertise and experience to eliminate them.
The President instructed that all necessary measures, precautions, and vigilance be implemented to the highest degree, without compromise, to proactively address the locust swarms at the borders and prevent their spread.
A preparatory and coordination meeting will be held in a model southern province to develop a comprehensive plan, drawing on the expertise of local specialists from the southern regions.
Close coordination with the Ministry of National Defense will be maintained throughout all stages of the locust control plan.
Regarding the prevention of drugs and psychoactive substances:
President Abdelmadjid Tebboune emphasised that Algeria is facing an undeclared war, with drugs of all kinds being used as weapons, targeting the country from its western and southern borders. This campaign, launched by malevolent forces, seeks to weaken generations of youth and disrupt Algeria’s social values, which the nation continues to resist and strive to protect.
The President ordered an in-depth study and further discussion of the national strategy and the draft law on drug and psychoactive substance prevention, stressing that both the draft law and the national prevention strategy are critical issues of national security.
The President called for a comprehensive approach to combat this issue, beginning with field-based initiatives to contain the phenomenon through awareness, monitoring, and treatment, and culminating in strong deterrence measures, including the harshest penalties for drug dealers and users, particularly of hard drugs, to safeguard the youth from this dangerous scourge.
Regarding the roadmap for diversifying energy sources for electricity production:
With a strategic vision, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune instructed the government to adopt a comprehensive approach that focuses on developing energy investments and directing surplus energy for export, as Algeria’s energy industry has proven both successful and efficient.
He emphasized that energy investments must be profitable for Algeria, particularly after achieving energy self-sufficiency.
In the future, Algeria will engage in international research partnerships to adopt new and clean energy sources, utilizing Algeria’s capabilities and expertise.
Algeria’s plan to increase energy production will follow a dual approach, combining support for both traditional and new investments while ensuring the country’s energy security.
The President encouraged Sonelgaz to take a leading role regionally and continentally, given its significant capabilities and highly skilled workforce.
On this occasion, President Tebboune again expressed his gratitude to all Sonelgaz workers and staff for their efforts in extending electricity access to remote areas of Algeria and supporting investment projects across various sectors.
The Cabinet meeting concluded with the approval of decrees and decisions involving appointments and the termination of high-level state positions.
