The 10th Congress of the National Union of Sahrawi Women (UNMS) opened Monday in the Sahrawi refugee camps of Smara, featuring delegates from various Sahrawi provinces and institutions, alongside foreign delegations and international organizations specialized in women’s issues and human rights.
The Secretary-General of the National Union of Sahrawi Women (UNMS), Shaba Seini, stated in her opening speech that the conference, named after the martyr Khadija Hamdi Abdallah, represents an important milestone for assessing the union’s activities over recent years. She also stressed its importance in exploring new prospects to further strengthen the role of Sahrawi women across various fields, particularly amid the current challenges facing the Sahrawi cause.
Seini explained that the three-day conference program includes workshops and discussion sessions addressing ways to empower women and enhance their contribution to development and community building, in addition to presentations of successful experiences in education, health and social work.
She also emphasized that the meeting is an opportunity to renew Sahrawi women’s commitment to continuing their struggle for their rights, strengthen their role in development, and their presence in institution-building.
The opening session comprised the presentation of the proposed conference leadership, the approval of the internal regulations, the presentation of the moral and financial reports, as well as the screening of a documentary highlighting the achievements of the outgoing mandate.
The event is expected to elect a new leadership for the union and adopt a set of recommendations to strengthen the status of Sahrawi women and enhance their participation in decision-making.
