Algeria, Mauritania Advance Fishing Cooperation as Minister Visits Tanit Port in Nouakchott

Algerian Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries, Yacine El-Mehdi Oualid, visited several fisheries facilities in the Mauritanian capital, Nouakchott, including Tanit Port, which is set to receive Algerian fishing vessels in the near future under a bilateral cooperation protocol on fisheries, maritime economy and aquaculture, the ministry said Sunday.
The visit forms part of efforts to implement the cooperation protocol signed during the 20th session of the Algerian-Mauritanian Joint High Commission, held recently in Algiers.
Accompanied by Mauritanian Minister of Agriculture and Food Sovereignty Mohamedou Ahmedou Mhaimid, Oualid toured Tanit Port, where seven Algerian fishing vessels are expected to dock shortly to utilize the agreed fishing quota, estimated at 31,120 tonnes, a ministry statement said.
The visit took place on the sidelines of the 34th session of the FAO Regional Conference for Africa, held in Nouakchott.
Oualid, accompanied by Algerian vessel owners involved in implementing the agreement, reviewed the logistical facilities and equipment available at Tanit Port for handling and processing fishery products, as well as the broader capacities and opportunities Mauritania offers in the fisheries sector. He stressed that the agreement would open up significant opportunities for investors in both countries and strengthen bilateral economic cooperation.
The visit also included meetings with professionals from Mauritania’s fisheries sector, including members of the National Federation of Fishermen, as well as all stakeholders involved in implementing the bilateral cooperation agreement in the fields of fisheries and aquaculture, the statement added.
