Algerian State Minister, Minister of Hydrocarbons Mohamed Arkab took part on Monday in the official installation ceremony of the Interministerial Energy Control Commission, held under the Ministry of Energy and Renewable Energies.
In his address, Arkab stressed that the creation of this commission is part of a comprehensive national strategy aimed at strengthening energy management and rationalizing consumption. He noted that Algeria is facing a steady rise in domestic energy demand, alongside the need to preserve natural resources, maintain economic balance, and respond to the requirements of the energy transition and carbon footprint reduction.
The minister explained that the hydrocarbons sector is working toward a new energy model based on efficiency and rational use of resources. This approach includes the wider adoption of modern technologies and clean energy solutions, particularly within production sites and industrial facilities, in order to reduce internal consumption and improve overall energy performance.
He further underlined that improving energy efficiency will help lower operating costs, free up significant quantities of hydrocarbons for industrial transformation or export, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Arkab also presented key ongoing programs in coordination with the Ministry of Energy and Renewable Energies, including the development of solar energy projects at Sonatrach sites, the expansion of energy auditing in refineries and liquefaction units, and the implementation of a green hydrogen strategy in partnership with various stakeholders, opening new prospects for future clean energy exports.
He also highlighted efforts to reduce gas flaring, strengthen emissions monitoring systems, develop carbon capture and storage technologies, and expand the use of low-energy lighting equipment across the sector’s installations.
Concluding his remarks, Arkab emphasized that the success of Algeria’s energy efficiency policy depends on stronger intersectoral coordination, praising the role of the newly installed commission in unifying efforts and implementing an integrated national approach to energy management, aimed at sustainable development and the preservation of resources for future generations.
