Algeria Calls for Stronger Parliamentary Unity to Address Global Crises at IPU Assembly

The Speaker of the Algerian People’s National Assembly, President of the Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union, and Chair of the Arab Geopolitical Group at the Inter-Parliamentary Union, Ibrahim Boughali, underscored on Sunday the importance of consolidating parliamentary efforts to confront global challenges, according to a statement issued by the Assembly.
In a speech delivered on his behalf by Assembly Vice President Mohamed Anouar Bouchouit at the closing of the IPU’s 152nd Assembly, Boughali said the session confirmed the Union’s role as an inclusive platform for constructive dialogue and convergence of views, strengthening parliaments’ capacity to address global challenges, the statement said.
The Assembly’s proceedings “took place in a delicate international context, marked by mounting challenges and an increasing need to consolidate the values of cooperation, dialogue, and joint parliamentary action,” he added.
The theme of this session, “Harnessing hope, upholding peace, and ensuring justice for future generations,” essentially reflects “a collective responsibility that goes beyond slogans and must be translated into practical policies and positions that respond to peoples’ aspirations for a more stable and equitable future.” He explained that this orientation “was concretely embodied through the adoption of the emergency item entitled: The urgent need for concerted parliamentary efforts to uphold ceasefire agreements and support the establishment of peace in the Middle East and other regions.”
Regarding this item, which was proposed by the State of Qatar with the support of the Arab Group and in partnership with several countries and geopolitical groups, Boughali noted that it “clearly reflects the capacity of international parliamentary action to build broad consensus around priority issues.” He further emphasized that this achievement “does not merely represent the success of a specific initiative, but rather embodies the spirit of cooperation and complementarity among various geopolitical groups.” Boughali affirmed that addressing global challenges “requires the pooling of efforts and the unification of visions, away from divisions, in a manner that enhances the prospects for peace and stability.”
