Sahrawi Foreign Ministry Condemns French Ambassador’s Visit to Occupied El Aaiun

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic strongly condemned the recent visit of the French ambassador to Morocco to the occupied city of El Aaiun, describing it as a provocative act that undermines international law and ongoing efforts to resolve the Western Sahara dispute.

In an official statement, the ministry said the visit constitutes “a new chapter in aggression” against the Sahrawi people and represents France’s support for Morocco’s presence in the territory of Western Sahara. It argued that such actions contradict international legitimacy resolutions, which continue to classify the issue as a decolonization process awaiting a fair resolution.

The statement further accused France of contributing to regional tensions and encouraging Morocco’s policies in the territory, including expansion, resource exploitation, and human rights violations. It also claimed that the visit reflects a defiance of the will of the international community and weakens efforts led by the United Nations to reach a mutually acceptable political solution.

The Polisario Front, also denounced the visit, considering it an attempt to entrench a colonial status quo. It reiterated that sovereignty over Western Sahara belongs exclusively to the Sahrawi people and reaffirmed its commitment to pursuing independence and the establishment of the Sahrawi state.

The statement concluded by urging France to abandon support for conflict and instead play a constructive role in promoting peace, respect for international law, and rapprochement between the peoples of the Maghreb region.
