Maia Sandu secures second term as president of Moldova in runoff election

CHISINAU – The incumbent President of Moldova, Maia Sandu, has won a second presidential term in the runoff election held on Sunday.

The Central Election Commission of Moldova reported that Sandu received 54% of the votes after counting 98% of the ballots, compared to 46% for her opponent, former Prosecutor General Alexandr Stoianoglo.

Initially, Stoianoglo was leading, but the trend reversed as the vote counting progressed.

“Moldova, you are victorious! … In our choice for a dignified future, no one lost,” Sandu said in a conciliatory victory speech, in which she said she had to address the concerns of those who voted against her.

“I have heard your voice, both those who supported me and those who voted for Mr. Stoianoglo. I commit to being the president for all of you,” she said.

Sandu led the first round of the presidential election held on October 20, securing 42.5% of the votes, while Stoianoglo received 26%.
