Kremlin Says Russia Awaits US Briefing on Ukraine–EU Peace Efforts

The Kremlin has said Russia expects the United States to provide information on its coordination with Ukraine and the European Union regarding possible steps toward a settlement of the conflict, according to statements by Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.

Speaking to reporters, Peskov addressed several issues related to diplomatic contacts, sanctions, and proposals circulating among Western states and Kiev.

US Envoy’s Role

Commenting on the role of US special envoy Steve Witkoff, Peskov emphasized that the American official represents Washington’s position, not Moscow’s, in discussions related to the peace process.

“Witkoff is carrying out President Donald Trump’s line,” Peskov said, adding that with each new round of contacts, the envoy gains a clearer understanding of Russia’s position on the conflict.

Sanctions Pressure

Peskov also said the Kremlin is aware that new US sanctions are being planned in Washington, even though it has not yet seen any official announcements.

“Any sanctions harm the establishment of relations,” he said, reiterating Moscow’s long-standing view that restrictive measures undermine dialogue and diplomatic engagement.

Zelensky and Peace Proposals

On Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s intentions, Peskov said Moscow would judge Kiev’s seriousness about peace after reviewing concrete proposals.

“The true extent of Zelensky’s desire for peace will become clear after we receive documents containing proposals from the EU and Kiev,” he noted.

Western Troops in Ukraine

Responding to discussions in the West about a so-called “Coalition of the Willing” and the possible deployment of Western troops in Ukraine, Peskov said Russia’s position remains unchanged.

“Our stance on the deployment of Western contingents in Ukraine is consistent and well known,” he said, without elaborating further.

The comments come amid ongoing diplomatic maneuvering and speculation over possible frameworks for ending the conflict, as Moscow, Washington, Kiev, and European capitals continue to signal differing approaches to a potential settlement.
