Death Toll Nears 2,900 as Myanmar and Thailand Reel from Devastating Earthquakes

The death toll from the powerful earthquakes in Myanmar has reached 2,886, with 4,639 injured and 373 still missing, according to the State Administration Council’s information team. In Thailand, authorities report that 72 people remain missing in Bangkok, where rescue operations continue at the collapsed State Audit Office tower block.

The twin earthquakes, measuring 7.7 and 6.4 in magnitude, struck Myanmar and Thailand last Friday, with the epicenter in Myanmar’s Sagaing region, the hardest-hit area. Thai and international rescue teams have been working tirelessly, using sniffer dogs and heavy machinery to locate survivors while navigating the risks posed by unstable debris. Over 100 workers were in the collapsed Bangkok tower when tremors from Myanmar’s quake caused the structure to give way.

Several countries have extended assistance to Myanmar in the wake of the disaster. Japan announced on Wednesday that it will provide $6 million in emergency grants to aid the victims.
