Chad President Concludes Official Visit to Algeria

ALGER, April 24, 2026 – The President of the Republic of Chad, Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno, concluded Friday a three-day official visit to Algeria, marked by the signing of several agreements and memorandums of understanding covering various areas of cooperation between the two countries.

He was seen off at Algiers International Airport by the President of the Council of the Nation, Azouz Nasri.

The visit provided an opportunity to consolidate achievements between Algeria and Chad, marking a decisive step toward building an expanded strategic partnership.

On this occasion, the Algerian President, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, held talks with his Chadian counterpart, extended to members of both delegations. The two heads of state later co-chaired, Wednesday evening at the Presidency of the Republic, a ceremony for the signing of a series of agreements and memorandums.

These agreements cover public works, communications, youth, animal health, the pharmaceutical industry, air transport services, higher education and scientific research, industry and trade, as well as a framework agreement on the construction of a refinery.

The two countries also signed a reciprocal visa exemption agreement for holders of diplomatic and service passports, as well as an agreement establishing political and diplomatic consultations between the two governments.

In a press statement, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune said the two countries had “taken today an important step toward building an integrated strategic partnership,” stressing Algeria’s commitment to standing by Chad and building a “successful African model of inter-African cooperation.”

He added that the visit reflects “our shared political will to continue the path we have outlined together during His Excellency’s visit to Algeria last September,” aimed at “giving new momentum to bilateral cooperation in various fields.”

“During our talks, we emphasized together the importance of activating cooperation mechanisms, including the joint commission, for which we jointly ensured the holding of its fourth session,” he said, adding that both sides committed, as of this visit, to “updating the legal framework governing our relations and signing nearly 30 agreements and memorandums of understanding.”

For his part, the President of Chad said his visit to Algeria “reflects a clear political will of both countries to move from traditional friendship to a new-generation strategic partnership.”

He added that Algeria and Chad “are not linked by mere chance,” but “share a historical depth inherited from the trans-Saharan route and a political vision shaped by our founding fathers.”
