AU Calls for Immediate Sudan Ceasefire, Unified Global Mediation Effort to End Humanitarian Crisis

African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf stressed the urgent need for an immediate ceasefire in Sudan, as a first step toward ending the immense suffering endured by the Sudanese people.
Speaking at the Third International Conference on Sudan, held Wednesday in Berlin, the AU Commission Chairperson called for greater coordination among the various international mediation efforts, cautioning that parallel and uncoordinated initiatives risk eroding the progress made so far.
He affirmed the African Unions pivotal role, calling on partners to align behind a unified approach that supports a Sudanese-led political process while ensuring the inclusion of civilian actors.
The Commission Chairperson appealed for sustained humanitarian support and a renewal of global attention to the crisis, stressing that coordinated action alone is capable of paving the way toward achieving lasting peace and stability in Sudan.
Sudan has been experiencing, since April 2023, an armed conflict between the army and the Rapid Support Forces, which has led to the killing of tens of thousands of Sudanese and caused famine within one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world, and the displacement of approximately 13 million people.
