Arrest Warrant Issued for Exiled Former Bangladeshi PM Sheikh Hasina on Charges of Crimes Against Humanity

A Bangladeshi court has issued an arrest warrant for exiled former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, following her removal from power in August after nationwide student protests. The warrant, issued on Thursday, calls for her to appear in court on November 18. Sheikh Hasina fled to India and has not been seen publicly since, with her last known location being a military airbase near New Delhi.

The charges against Hasina stem from her 15-year rule, during which widespread reports of human rights abuses emerged. These include allegations of mass detentions and extrajudicial killings of political opponents. Chief prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam of Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal stated, “Sheikh Hasina was at the helm of those who committed massacres, killings, and crimes against humanity from July to August.”

The case against the former Prime Minister marks a significant development in Bangladesh’s political landscape, as the country continues to grapple with the aftermath of her ousting and the ongoing calls for accountability.
