Algeria’s Army Foils Attempts to Smuggle More Than 2.5 Quintals of Cannabis Through Moroccan Border

ALGIERS, May 14, 2026 — Attempts to smuggle more than 2.5 quintals of processed cannabis through the borders with Morocco were foiled during operations carried out by combined detachments of the People’s National Army (ANP), in coordination with various security services, during the period from May 6 to 12, according to an operational report released Thursday by the ANP.

“As part of sustained efforts in the fight against terrorism and organized cross-border crime, units and detachments of the ANP carried out several operations from May 6 to 12, 2026, yielding significant results that reflect the high professionalism, vigilance and constant readiness of our Armed Forces across the national territory,” the same source said.

Within the framework of counterterrorism efforts, ANP detachments arrested 11 individuals supporting terrorist groups in separate operations across the country.

As part of the fight against organized crime and “in continuation of efforts aimed at combating drug trafficking in our country, combined ANP detachments intercepted, in coordination with various security services, 56 drug traffickers and foiled attempts to introduce 2 quintals and 52 kilograms of processed cannabis coming from the Moroccan borders, while 3.2 kilograms of cocaine and 1,473,878 psychotropic tablets were seized during operations carried out across the military regions,” the report added.

In Tamanrasset, Bordj Badji Mokhtar, Illizi and In Salah, ANP detachments “arrested 124 individuals and seized 33 vehicles, 122 generators, 99 jackhammers, quantities of raw gold mix and stones, as well as equipment used in illegal gold mining operations.”

In separate operations, “12 other individuals were arrested and two submachine guns, one automatic pistol, nine hunting rifles, 60,275 liters of fuel and 15 tonnes of food products intended for smuggling were seized.”

In addition, the Coast Guard “foiled attempts at illegal migration along the national coasts and rescued 46 individuals aboard homemade boats, while 251 undocumented migrants of various nationalities were arrested across the national territory,” the statement concluded.
