Algeria Signs United Nations Agreement to Strengthen Marine Biodiversity Protection

At the start of his visit to New York to participate in the high-level segment of the United Nations General Assembly, Algerian Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad, and African Affairs, Ahmed Attaf, signed on Saturday the “Agreement relating to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea on the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine Biological Diversity in Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction” (BBNJ), the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.
The signing ceremony took place in the presence of the Under-Secretary-General for Legal Affairs and United Nations Legal Counsel, Elinor Hammarskjöld, the statement said.
This agreement aims to enhance the protection of marine biodiversity in the high seas and to ensure its sustainable and responsible use for the benefit of all humanity, the source added.
