Algeria, Azerbaijan Deepen Strategic Energy Partnership Through Expanded Hydrocarbon Cooperation Talks

At the end of the meeting, both sides agreed to hold future expert-level meetings to explore new opportunities for cooperation and expand the partnership in the field of energy and renewable energy.

The Algerian Minister of State, Minister of Hydrocarbons, Mohamed Arkab, received on Sunday in Algiers a parliamentary delegation from the Republic of Azerbaijan led by Shahin Ismayilov, President of the Azerbaijan-Algeria Parliamentary Friendship Group and Chairman of the Youth and Sports Committee of the National Assembly. Both sides examined ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the hydrocarbons sector and expand partnership areas between the two countries, according to a ministry statement.

During the meeting, held in the presence of the head of the Algeria-Azerbaijan Friendship Group at the People’s National Assembly (Parliament’s Upper House), Abdelbaset Gharbi, and ministry officials, both sides affirmed the “friendly and excellent” bilateral relations. Discussions focused on developing cooperation in well services, field development, hydrocarbon transport, refining, and petrochemicals, alongside various activities related to the oil and gas industry.

The two parties also underscored the importance of enhancing the exchange of expertise, experience, and training, particularly in oil and gas industry professions, with a view to developing human competencies and raising performance standards across the entire value chain.

In this respect, the two sides reviewed investment and partnership opportunities between the companies of both countries, particularly between the Sonatrach Group and the Azerbaijani State Oil Company (SOCAR), while examining mechanisms to boost technical and technological exchange.

The meeting also provided an opportunity to recall the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between the two countries in Algiers in November 2022. Both sides reaffirmed the need to implement its provisions on the ground, opening new avenues for cooperation and consolidating the bilateral strategic partnership in the hydrocarbons sector.

Furthermore, the two sides exchanged views on developments in global oil and gas markets, affirming the importance of continued coordination and consultation within the framework of “OPEC+” and the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF), to support market stability and ensure energy supply security.
