Yemen’s Houthis promise escalation in support of Gaza

The Yemeni Houthi group said on Tuesday that it attacked the USS Harry Truman aircraft carrier in the Red Sea, as well as a US destroyer, marking the third attack in 48 hours.

“The American aggressor bears the full responsibility for the consequences of militarising the Red Sea and expanding the scope of confrontation,” Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree said, adding that US airstrikes on Yemen “negatively impact international maritime navigation.”

Washington launched a fresh wave of airstrikes on Yemen on Monday, targeting an iron factory in the coastal province of Al-Hudaydah.

U.S. President Donald Trump launched his biggest military operation in the Middle East since taking office in January against Yemen’s Houthis on Saturday, at the start of a campaign expected to continue for weeks.

At least 53 people have been killed in the attacks, Anees Alsbahi, a spokesperson for the Houthi-run health ministry, said on Sunday. Five children and two women were among the victims, and 98 have been hurt, Alsbahi added on X.

The Houthis have been attacking “Israeli-linked” ships passing through the Red and Arabian seas, the Bab al-Mandab Strait and the Gulf of Aden with missiles and drones since late 2023, as a show of solidarity with the Gaza Strip.

In the aftermath of the Zionist occupation’s massive raids on Gaza, the Yemeni group condemned “the Zionist enemy’s resumption of aggression” and promised an escalation in support of Palestinians.

“The Palestinian people will not be left alone in this battle, and Yemen will continue its support and assistance, and escalate confrontation steps,” the Houthis’ Supreme Political Council said in a statement.

Accordingly, media sources reported that the Zionist entity was opening shelters in multiple areas to prepare for possible retaliation from Yemen.
