White House: Chinese President Expressed Interest in Buying American Oil

The White House announced that Chinese President Xi Jinping expressed interest in increasing purchases of American oil during his talks with US President Donald Trump in Beijing, according to a statement released following the meeting.
According to the White House, Xi indicated that China is seeking to reduce its dependence on the Strait of Hormuz as a strategic energy corridor, amid ongoing regional tensions and concerns over disruptions to global oil supplies.
The discussions took place during a high-level US-China summit focused on trade, energy security, and geopolitical developments in the Middle East. The two sides also agreed on the importance of keeping the Strait of Hormuz open to ensure the free flow of global energy supplies.
US officials said the talks included broader economic issues, including expanding Chinese purchases of American agricultural products and strengthening bilateral economic cooperation.
Chinese official media, however, did not mention any potential oil purchase agreements in their summaries of the summit, while Beijing’s Foreign Ministry has not publicly commented on the matter.
China remains the world’s largest crude oil importer, although American oil has historically represented only a limited share of its imports. Trade in US crude to China has sharply declined since 2025 following tariff disputes between the two countries.
