UN Security Council: Algerian FM Chairs Meeting of A3+ Foreign Ministers

The Algerian Minister of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad, Ahmed Attaf, chaired a meeting of the foreign ministers of the A3+ group in New York, an initiative led by Algeria, as stated in a ministry announcement on Wednesday.
The A3+ group consists of the three African non-permanent members of the United Nations Security Council—Algeria, Sierra Leone, and Mozambique—along with Guyana, which maintains historical ties of solidarity with the African continent.
Somalia also took part in this meeting in anticipation of its upcoming term on the Security Council, set to begin on January 1, 2025, succeeding Mozambique, as noted in the statement.
“Initiated by Algeria, which coordinates the group, this meeting reaffirmed our commitment to continue regular consultations and maintain close coordination on various issues on the Security Council’s agenda. It also explored ways to preserve this consultation mechanism while enhancing its effectiveness and coherence,” the statement specified.
This gathering is part of the preparations for the upcoming High-Level Conference on Peace and Security in Africa, scheduled for early December in Oran, Algeria. The statement highlighted that “the establishment of the A3 group represents one of the significant achievements of the ‘Oran Process,’ which began over ten years ago.”
