UK: GB Energy to be based in Aberdeen, announced PM Starmer

LIVERPOOL – Britain’s new state-backed power company GB Energy will be headquartered in Aberdeen, Scotland’s third largest city, Prime Minister Keir Starmer said on Tuesday, according to Reuters.

Instead of supplying electricity directly to households, GB Energy plans to develop, invest in, and own renewable energy projects.

“We said GB Energy, our publicly-owned national champion, the vehicle that will drive forward our mission on clean energy, belonged in Scotland. And it does,” Starmer told delegates at Labour’s annual conference in Liverpool.

Two additional GB Energy sites will open in Edinburgh and Glasgow. The company’s initial location will be in government buildings while permanent bases are finalised. Besides, an interim chief executive would be appointed soon, the government said in a statement.

The government aims to decarbonise the electricity sector by 2030, which requires a significant and rapid increase in renewable power capacity, including wind and solar energy.

In collaboration with the Crown Estate, GB Energy will be the government’s main tool to drive investment.

Great British Energy is a British governmental investment body and a publicly owned energy generation company that has been announced as part of the Labour Party’s plan for energy policy. It endeavours to invest in renewable energy and own, manage, and operate clean power projects.
