Turkey : President Erdogan describes social media censoring policy as “digital fascism”

ANKARA – President Recep Tayyip Erdogan accused social media platforms of “digital fascism” on Monday for censoring photographs of Palestinian martyrs, while Instagram is still blocked in the country.

“They cannot even tolerate photographs of Palestinian martyrs and immediately ban them,” Erdogan said at a human rights event. “We are confronted with a digital fascism that is disguised as freedom.”

The Turkish officials are currently engaged in discussions with representatives of the social media platform, Instagram, to resume accessibility for more than 57 million users.

The Information and Communication Technologies Authority banned access to Instagram in response to the latter’s censoring policy, which opposes the Turkish solidarity with Palestine.
