Turkey and Iraq Sign “Historic” Memorandum of Understanding

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding focused on military and security cooperation, as well as counterterrorism efforts with Iraq. During a joint press conference held yesterday, Thursday, with his Iraqi counterpart Fouad Hussein—who is visiting Turkey following the fourth meeting of the high-level security mechanism between the two countries—Fidan emphasized that this memorandum, signed by the defense ministers of both nations, holds “historical significance.”
He expressed his belief that the establishment of joint coordination and training centers outlined in the agreement will elevate their collaboration to a new level. Fidan highlighted the necessity of enhancing mutual understanding through concrete actions on the ground in the fight against terrorism.
In response, the Iraqi Foreign Minister described the memorandum of understanding on military and security and counterterrorism cooperation as the first of its kind in the history of the two nations. He noted that the discussions also aimed to activate 27 agreements signed on April 22, which cover various sectors, including the economy, trade, energy, water, culture, tourism, health, transportation, agriculture, education, youth, sports, and social security.
Furthermore, he mentioned that committees have been established in all these areas and will commence their work after reviewing the agreements and memoranda of understanding signed by both countries. He also underscored the importance of coordinating efforts to address organized crime, migration, drug trafficking, illegal trade, and transnational organizations.
