Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan Sign Landmark Border Demarcation Agreement

Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan have formally signed a border demarcation agreement, a historic step toward resolving longstanding disputes between the two Central Asian nations. The agreement was signed in Bishkek by Tajik President Emomali Rahmon and his Kyrgyz counterpart Sadyr Japarov, according to the Kyrgyz news agency Kabar on Thursday.

The signing followed a series of intense negotiations between government delegations, culminating in a comprehensive border agreement reached on February 21, 2025.

Official sources from both countries announced that a final settlement had been reached, taking into account “the interests of both sides” and satisfactorily defining previously disputed border areas.

The agreement is seen as a “decisive step” toward enhancing regional security and unlocking new avenues for cooperation between the two nations, particularly in economic, energy, and infrastructure sectors, the agency reported.

Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan, both former Soviet republics, have been engaged in periodic border skirmishes over disputed territories since gaining independence. This agreement is expected to reduce tensions and pave the way for increased stability in the region.
